Mastery Steward
The Mastery Steward owns the learning and capability of the organisation. Their mandate is to make organisation and individual a little better every day: small daily improvements compound and turn into exponential growth over time. That is how M counters mediocrity, in the individual and in the organisation.
Effort: 10 to 20 %, depending on the size of the organisation
Outcome
- Organisation and individual get a little better every day; the small improvements compound.
- The person is the primary driver of their development; M builds the structure that makes it possible.
- Competence grows visibly: the skill matrix is current and supplies reliable competence facts for grading in S.
- Knowledge flows and stays reusable: learning loops produce improvements, artefacts and secured knowledge.
- What A demands is demonstrably translated into learning, individually and organisationally.
- Self-responsibility is anchored as a competence: taught at entry, refreshed regularly.
Fields
- Competence development
- Skill matrix (people, competences, levels), training planning and budget as a system, career and competence paths including expert tracks. Career means a growing sphere of impact, not a climb up a hierarchy. Professional onboarding, certifications and vendor partnerships.
- Knowledge and learning
- Knowledge management, knowledge communities, learning architecture (learning loops, reviews, knowledge capture), implementation of learning accountability.
Design and execution
| Field | The Steward designs | Execution sits with |
|---|---|---|
| Competence development | Frame of the mastery system: competence levels and evidence criteria, the rule that translates levels into decision rights per core job, path logic including expert tracks, frame for training and certification | Competence development anchor: maintains the skill matrix, plans training and budget as a system, runs professional onboarding and vendor partnerships. Grading is ratified by S |
| Knowledge and learning | Guardrails of the learning and knowledge architecture: formats of the learning loops, structure and quality rules for knowledge capture, the learning chain as the translation rule of learning accountability | Knowledge and learning anchor: knowledge management, knowledge communities, learning formats. Implementing the improvement sits with the affected core job, normative changes are ratified by S, the platform comes from I |
Proposed Anchor Core Jobs
- Competence development
- Skill matrix, training planning and budget as a system, career and competence paths, professional onboarding, certifications. Competence belongs to the person; the level (developing, established, mastery) applies per competence. The core job translates levels into decision rights. Grading is ratified by S.
- Knowledge and learning
- Knowledge management, knowledge communities, learning architecture, implementation of learning accountability. The learning chain: A demands that learning happens; M supplies the how; implementation sits with the affected core job; structural change is ratified by S. The platform comes from I.
Powers at design level
- Sets the guardrails, frames and degrees of freedom of their letter; they take effect immediately.
- Owns the veto when a new core job breaks the guardrails.
- Cuts the anchor structure of their letter; new core jobs are created together with governance.
Drift protection
This steward does not become a certificate factory, a training department, a performance rating or a pure knowledge archive. What counts is not the volume of certificates, sessions and artefacts but whether people act more autonomously, more effectively and more precisely. M does not assess performance: it supplies competence facts, grading is ratified by S. And M does not take over other people's improvements: M owns the how of learning; that learning happens is owned by A; the change itself belongs to whoever owns the affected structure.
Competencies
- Mastery system
- describes competence levels and evidence criteria and calibrates how levels translate into decision rights.
- Competence diagnostics
- places artefacts, certificates and demonstrable experience without assessing performance.
- Learning architecture
- designs learning loops, reflection formats and follow-ups so that learning happens inside everyday work.
- Knowledge architecture
- structures knowledge topics and keeps knowledge findable and reusable, connected with I.
- Community facilitation
- designs knowledge formats methodically and condenses content into usable artefacts.
Strengths
- Precision of language
- finds clear words for levels, expectations and evidence.
- Fair judgement
- checks evidence traceably and without personal preference.
- Integrative power
- connects people, topics and artefacts into one learning system.
- Quality standard
- stops empty formats, false precision and pure archive logic.
- Ego distance
- puts shared learning progress above their own opinion.
